The Sichuan Provincial Museum, originally known as the Sichuan Museum, is situated at the Renmin South Road in Chengdu City. First built in March 1941 and moved to the present site in 1965, the Sichuan Museum now covers an area of 46,000 square meters.

The Sichuan Museum boasts a collection of more than 160,000 cultural relics telling the story of Sichuan, with over 2,000 of the first and second class. Exhibits include the skull of Ziyang Man from 30,000BC, a human face stone baldric of the Neolithic Age unearthed in Wushan County, a bronze sword of 62cm long produced in the Warring States Period (475-221BC) excavated in Chongqing City, which is a precious reference to the study of Bashu Culture (Bashu is the ancient name of the region), etc. Displays of tiled murals, frescoes and stone inscriptions taken from tombs dating back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220AD) hold an important position among all cultural relics in the Sichuan Museum.

The basic displays of Historical Relics of Sichuan and the Revolutionary Heritage of Sichuan exhibit altogether about 4,000 pieces and take up an exhibition area of about 3,000 square meters.

The Display of Historical Relics of Sichuan exhibits large quantities of caput bone fossils, stone tools, pottery, bronze weapons, porcelains and seals spanning the years from the Neolithic Age to the Qing Dynasty (1368-1911), paintings and artworks of famous painters and sculptors of the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties, and other ancient collections related to the ethnic minorities in the region.

The Display of Revolutionary Heritage of Sichuan exhibits weapons and documents of the revolutionists in the early 20th century, especially some precious relics of the Red Army, from which visitors can have a glimpse of the Long March.

Publications of the Sichuan Museum include picture albums of Facsimiles of Zhang Daqian's Dunhuang Murals and Boat Coffins of Sichuan, etc.
